September Weekend Bike Ride 9-11-10

This weekend I got around to breaking out the F800GS for a extended ride. Often times I’ll plan my ride days, weeks or months in advance. I didn’t have a set agenda other than explore new places.
This picture is south of Canonville, Utah looking towards the backside of Bryce Canyon. I have spent a lot of time just north of here on Boulder Mountain atving and the Henry Mountains to the West and of course Bryce Canyon to the west. This was a section of Utah that I have overlooked even though it has been made into Grand Staircase National Monument by President Clinton. Paria River runs down through this section of Utah when it runs. It wasn’t running due to the lateness of Summer. Closer to the Colorado River the Paria grows into some deep canyons. Here though it was a drive open river bed that begged to be ridden in. You could see a lot of tracks that 4 wheelers had gotten that idea of. But with a heavier laden bike the BMW F800GS is not suited to do. What it is suited for is all day long riding on forest service fire roads and tight paved mountain twisties without tiring.
I ran into other bikers all day long. A group of mxers met me a the top of a viewpoint overlooking the deserts stretching down to Kanab. They came up the from the other direction and we shared war stories for a spell. In Cedar City I spent some time talking to a Harley Rider from Hawaii who comes over a few times each year to ride. He stores his bike in Vegas and the whole continent is his playground. Just no place to ride in Hawaii. I pointed out that there is just no place to dive in Utah.
Later I met Tom a BMW Dakar rider from Sandy and we talked bikes for a good while before his wife become inpatient and gave him the look. All in all it was a one of the funnest solo weekends I have ridden.
